Offline maps and navigation for motorcycle trips with no signal
Offline is not a degraded mode in Qafilaa. It is the mode the app was designed in. You download the route corridor before you leave, and the map, the plan, the rally points and the safety screens keep working when the network does not.
Download the route corridor before you ride
A trip in Qafilaa knows its own roads, because you planned them day by day. Before you leave, you download the corridor around that route as an offline map: the roads in your itinerary and the ground either side of them. Do it on Wi-Fi at home or at the hotel, so the whole trip is on the phone before the signal goes.
Navigation that steps down instead of failing
Navigation never simply stops. It drops one rung at a time:
- Live route, while you have a signal.
- Cached route, the last route the app fetched for this leg.
- Stored geometry, the road line saved with your trip when you planned it.
- Bearing and distance to the next rally point, as a last resort, so you always know which way the group is.
What keeps working with no signal
- The map you downloaded, your position on it, and the route for the day.
- Your day-wise itinerary, stays and rally points.
- Your documents and permits, kept on the phone.
- Checklists, reminders and trip notes.
- Expenses: log them anywhere, and the balances reconcile later.
- The safety screens, your medical card and crash detection.
- The last known position of every rider in the convoy, and how old it is.
What syncs when the signal comes back
Everything you do offline is queued on the phone: your positions, expenses, ticks on a checklist, notes and changes to the plan. When any signal returns, it is sent in order, and other riders' changes arrive the same way. A crash alert raised in a dead zone is queued too, and fires the moment any rider in the convoy reconnects.
Where this matters
Long stretches of the Manali-Leh highway, most of the Spiti circuit and the high roads of Nepal and Bhutan have no coverage at all. Those are the roads Qafilaa was built on, which is why every screen reads from the phone first and treats the network as a bonus.
Questions riders ask
Can I use Qafilaa without internet?
Yes. Every screen reads from the phone’s own storage first, so your trip, the map you downloaded, your rally points, your documents and the safety screens all work with no signal. Anything you change offline is queued and syncs when a signal returns.
How do offline maps work for a motorcycle trip?
Before you leave, you download the route corridor for the trip: the roads in your itinerary and the land either side of them. Do it on Wi-Fi at home or at the hotel, so the map is on the phone before the signal goes.
Does navigation work offline?
It steps down rather than failing. With a signal you get the live route. Without one, Qafilaa uses the cached route, then the route geometry stored with your trip, and as a last resort a bearing and distance to the next rally point.
What syncs when I get signal back?
Your positions, expenses, checklist ticks, notes and any changes to the plan are queued on the phone and sent when a signal returns. Other riders’ changes arrive the same way.
Qafilaa is free on the App Store and Google Play, for iPhone (iOS 15.5 or later) and Android. No advertising, no cross-app tracking.
